Parts of Speech

There are different kinds of words in a sentence; we call them parts of speech. Each part of speech has a different role in an English sentence.

  1. Nouns are the names of people, places, things, or ideas. (Ex.: woman, country, pencil, thought)
  2. Pronouns replace nouns. (Ex.: I, us, this, one, everybody)
  3. Verbs express actions or states of being. (Ex.: run, learn, appear)
  4. Adjectives modify nouns. (Ex.: high, Italian, interesting)
  5. Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or whole sentences. (Ex.: suddenly, tomorrow, very, moreover)
  6. Prepositions show relationships between nouns. (Ex.: to, over, instead of)
  7. Conjunctions connect words, phrases, or clauses in a sentence. (and, or, because, unless)
  8. Interjections (also known as exclamations) express emotion. They are usually not part of the sentence structure. (Ex.: oh, yuck)
Watch this short video by Paige Carrera to see some more examples. (Ms. Carrera is a certified tutor in the Tampa Bay area of Florida.) Can you point out her mistake? Which kind of word is not in the sample sentence? (Leave a comment on the blog.)

I think her mistake is she forgot to talk about an adjective. A pronoun is not in the sample sentence.

1. Can you point out her mistake?
-> She explained parts of speech except for the adjectives. I think it is her mistake.

2. Which kind of word is not in the sample sentence?
-> There are not the pronouns.

* Question
: I heard that she said "Johnny is a noun and also the pronoun of the this perticular sentence." But I had known that someone's name is a noun, it is not a pronoun. Is the name both a noun and a pronoun?

I confuse like Jay too.

1.Can you point out her mistake?
- In the first time she reads, she forgot to say the words "heavy", Is that a mistake? :) and another mistake is she didn't explain about adjectives

2. Which kind of word is not in sample sentence?
- I think like Jay. Why the word "Johnny" is a pronoun. Pronoun is can replace noun but she says this word onetime. It can be only Subject and Nouns.

i think that she must not take the subject as a pronoun only a noun.

I don't know another her mistake!
She read the sentence without "heavy".
oh... Ploy, thank you :)

Thank you for all your comments! You did a great job. I think Paige actually did mention the adjective "heavy" even though she omitted the word when she read the sentence the first time. But you are completely right: a noun cannot also be a pronoun. Paige misspoke there. She could have said, "Johnny is a noun, and it is also the subject of the sentence." A word cannot be both a noun and a pronoun. Also, the example sentence does not have any pronouns in it. Can you think of a way to revise the sentence so that it includes a pronoun?
